Phantom

Synopsis
Haunting and unforgettable, a sensual and poetic exploration of a man's internal conflict between good and evil and of a search for love amidst darkness and despair."

What Nichol Thinks
This book is possibly my favorite of all time. Kay takes the original Leroux Phantom and gives it more depth. Now the tortured soul has a history and be thought of as Erik instead of the phantom or "the dude with the mask"

Pandora's Daughter

Synopsis
Bestselling author Iris Johansen delivers a novel about a woman who is unaware that she has psychic powers, but must uncover the mysteries of her own mind when strangers start trying to kill her.
Biography
While Iris Johansen's style has evolved over the years, the same skill that made her "one of the leading authors of romance fiction" (Barbara Kemp) has helped establish her reputation in a broader field. As Catherine Coulter noted, "Iris Johansen is a bestselling author for the best reason -- she's a wonderful storyteller."
What Nichol Thinks
The story line is very good. The writing was also good but this is far from my favorite book.

Angel of Music: Tales of the Phantom of the Opera

Synopsis
Three stories, based on characters from the original Phantom of the Opera novel. Three stories, revisiting that universe. A phantom who lives in hiding. An angel heard in dreams. There are "Phantoms of the Mind," that send a lonely rape victim spiraling off into madness. There’s "The Portal," a place where darkness meets light. There is "Little Lotte," the child who hears an angel sing. Unlike any stage or screen version, the focus is angel, not phantom. Ever present, he unites the threads of these tales.

Splendid! I loved every page! If you're a phantom fan this is among the best for you!

Perlman's Ordeal

Synopsis
An enthralling novel about spiritualism, the symphony, and the lost city of Atlantis.
London, 1906. Dr. August Perlman-music lover, opium addict, and pioneer of "clinical suggestion"-is on his way to the symphony when a teenage girl is brought to his office. Sylvie Blum is catatonic, unwashed, and dehydrated. It seems that another girl's personality is living inside her.
Perlman goes to the symphony anyway, and meets the charismatic spiritualist Madame Helena Barrett, who soon gets young Sylvie to talk. Her story bears astonishing resemblances to the myth of Atlantis. The girl within the girl says she once lived there.
The doctor wants to suppress her story; the spiritualist is desperate to hear it told. And so they battle for the soul of the girl, both in London and in the world of wonders that is the imagination. Their conflict is overshadowed by the ghost of Madame's late brother, a composer whose life and work are brilliantly imagined by the author.
Biography
Brooks Hansen is the author of The Chess Garden (1995) and Caesar's Antlers (1997), a novel for young adults. Together with Nick Davis he wrote the novel Boone (1990). He lives in New York City.
What Nichol Think.
This book is very strange. It's one of those books that starts off so slow that you just want to put it down and never pick it up again. But it becomes more interesting as it progresses. Yet, there are parts that never make sense. If you read this book, I hope you speak French, because there is at least one conversation (if my memory serves me right) that is entirely in French.

Evernight

Synopsis
Bianca wants to escape. She's been uprooted from her small hometown and enrolled at Evernight Academy, an eerie Gothic boarding school where the students are somehow too perfect: smart, sleek, and almost predatory. Bianca knows she doesn't fit in. Then she meets Lucas. He's not the "Evernight type" either, and he likes it that way. Lucas ignores the rules, stands up to the snobs, and warns Bianca to be careful—even when it comes to caring about him. "I couldn't stand it if they took it out on you," he tells Bianca, "and eventually they would." But the connection between Bianca and Lucas can't be denied. Bianca will risk anything to be with Lucas, but dark secrets are fated to tear them apart . . . and to make Bianca question everything she's ever believed.
Biography
Claudia Gray is the pseudonym of New York-based writer Amy Vincent. She has worked as a lawyer, a journalist, a disc jockey, and an extremely poor waitress. Her lifelong interests in old houses, classic movies, vintage style, and history all played a part in creating the world of Evernight.
What Nichol Thinks
I loved it at the beginning. But somewhere toward the middle it gave a surprising twist that I didn't like much at all. It pretty much lost me after that.

His other works include The Biafra Story, The Shepherd, and a short story collection, No Comebacks.
What Nichol Thinks
Possibly the most hated book in all of phandom! The storyline could have been good but having Erik wear a clown suit and giving him a last name just ruined it all. I need to stop here before I make myself mad.
